Before the garden design

Cottage Renovation

This project was quite the challenge...

Good friends had recently renovated their cottage and wanted their garden to compliment the beautiful interior.

They have a large garden but access to it wasn't great and the area immediately by the house was unusable. They wanted better connection to the garden and a space for entertaining, but here's the challenge - they also needed to extend the drive to accommodate 4 vehicles but without the whole area feeling like a carpark.

I designed the space on the 45 degree to make the drive larger whilst also creating 2 lovely seating areas connected by a cobbled path and feature raised planting beds provide a stunning view from the house.

Hand-drawn garden design

Thought process:

I stood inside their kitchen at the sink looking out and visualising how to create a view that was about plants & garden rather than looking at the garage and parked cars.

I also wanted to make sure there was a good view from the dining room - that this felt like garden.

It was a case of experimenting with spaces - I drew patio sizes and cars and placed in different ways on the base plan.

Creating the wall and planting beds on the 45 degree angle gave the perfect separation from the drive and placed deep planting beds exactly where you needed the pretty views from the windows. It alo created zones - different outdoor rooms for different purposes - a morning brew in the sun and a family entertaining area.

The End Result...
